Scots Regiments in World War I. I think the German expression was the Women from Hell. But my God didn't they suffer. The trenches were alive with all kinds of bugs, and they found the pleats of the kilt a warm place to snuggle down and reproduce. The Kilt was finally abandoned for active service when the Black Watch regiment got a paratroop division. A commanding officer, watching his troupers descend through the sky, conceded that trews might be better. (No truth in this, but it's a good story).
