Car gets harder and harder to steer, untill eventually running a dry pump can damage it for good.

All of the above, but main item to stress is DON'T let it run out.
I check all my fluid levels Sunday evening before the beginning of the work week. Do not need any surprises during the week.
If you are losing fluid, have it checked out and fixed. Steering is nothing to take lightly or ignore.

The wheel will be more difficult to turn. Believe it or not, 50 years ago, there was no hydraulic steeric, it was all manual.

Once the vehicle is in motion, steering is easier. If the car is at rest, it is very hard to turn the steering wheel without hydraulic assistance.

The steering will become un-assisted and become very difficult to turn. If it happens while on the road, you may lose control of you vehicle and get into an accident. Also, the seals in the pump will overheat and quickly fail. The pump will need to be replaced.

Nothing that can't be repaired by replacing the power steering pump and rack. Altogether depending on make and model that could easily run you $1,000-1,400. $1,200 was I think what it cost to do a Toyota Avalon a few weeks ago in my shop.

Don't let it go until it gets that bad.

its for your power steering. Without the fluid it becomes more & more difficult to steer because there is more resistance. then you crash.
