Unfortunately, Social healtcare is a complete failure in Canada because of Government intervention which does not promote competition among private carriers. The government does not belong being in healthcare (although welfare is the best healthcare other people's money can buy)The argument for socialized healthcare is that everyone has healthcare, here is the truth. There are many people who don't need nor want healthcare because they are young and have no diseases, and who is the government to say that I need healthcare. The reason healthcare costs in the United States is so expensive is because of the 20 year mother who has 3 kids out of wedlock, who takes her stupid kid who has the sniffles to the ER for treatment. If America would lose the safety net for these bums, costs would plummet and America would not be funding a liability that costs taxpayers 300 billion dollars a year. There is no gain for the money spent by liberal republicans/democrats. There is too much government intervention and if people think healthcare is expensive now, wait until it is free. america has the best healthcare system in the world.

As an American (one of the 45 million uninsured), I don't care for the idea of social health care. Even though we just went into debt $20,000 for my husband's knee surgery, we went uninsured for 17 years. We would have to pay $500/mo for private health care. It doesn't take an idiot to do the math: 17years x12 months/year x $500 = $102,000 - we came out WAY ahead by not having health insurance. We have never been to the doctor besides once or twice for minor stuff. And the whole deal where you guys get taxed almost 50% of your income, and then get put on a waiting list... for example - my co-worker said she lived in canada and had 3 months to live because her heart valve was faulty and they scheduled her surgery for 7 months out. Yet if she were to pay cash for the surgery, she could have it next week - done by the SAME DOCTOR!!!! People idolize the healthcare you guys have, but really, I like ours the way it is.

Glad you gave that TESTIMONIAL from Canada! Americans think it would be the Best thing since Candy! It is not a good thing and that is what they are trying to convince us to do. It is an HMO gone all the way wrong with no choice of physician. You may as well go to a Voodoo or Witch doctor! General Pelosi and the Communist Block need to take a hike!

Anecdotal and how do you know what happened other than heresay?
Let's throw out the baby with the bathwater!
Many in this country are even worse off than your grandmother! They can't afford to "walk in and pay for it!"
Angie, the only reason your medical insurance is so high is not the medical industry all the time! Insurance people, like Anthem, pay their CEO's 2 Million a year and give them a 12 million dollar bonus. In addition they have to pay there non working stockholders! There are at least 5 in Anthem that make more than a million a year! Now times that by the number of insurance companies!
How does it feel to pay $10.00 for a Tylenol that hospitals get for nothing?

Hey, she is lucky - as a Canadian who is not staying in Canada and spending in Canada - to be able to get permit to be on the waiting for jealth services in Canada. She's lucky to have the means to get treatment in the US. Think of all those poor Americans who can't even afford to pay the insurance premiums, no matter how cheap they are! Think they'd even be put on the waiting list by the hospitals here?
Oh yes, social welfare would serve poor Americans well. Social Health Care does not stop the rich from paying for private, high-class treatment. For instance, social health care in England, for centuries, has never stopped the rich from going to the top-notched Harley Street doctors and specialists!

Don't forget that the poor sick do spread their diseases, if contageous, to the Public if they are not being treated.

In the US, for some reason we have this notion that the government will step in and take care of us when we need it to, yet we are unwilling to accept tax increases to pay for these programs.
The reason why the people in congress always bring this subject up is simple, old people vote. Who uses health care the most, old people. I'm not trying to be insulting here, this is just a simple cause and effect. Old people vote, they want cheap or free health care, I try to get that for them, they will vote for me.
Why do you think that Social Sercurity is always a huge issue, the program was designed originally only for the few, now it is like life support for the many. Why did any attempt to reform it fail, because the main voting block, senior citizens, were scared of losing their benifits that they depend on.
Social programs are almost always doomed to fail because government programs waste more than private, they cost more and they are slower to react to changes that are needed to be made to make the programs work effectively.

My sister-in-law is Native American and qualifies for - well, basically socialized medicine. It SUCKS. If you're a relatively healthy person, no problem - but God help you if you have serious health issues. No one else will.
