Gear ratio is the difference between the amount of teeth on the ring gear and the pinion gear. The difference in a high and low ratio is with a high ratio I.E.= 4.10-1 you will get more torque or pushing power and a slower top speed or higher engine rpms. With a low gear ratio I.E. 2.85-1 you get less power at slower speeds, and a higher top speed with reduced engine rpms. Ratio is determined by dividing the number of teeth on the ring gear by the number of teeth on the pinion gear.

The gear ratio is the number of times the car power from the driveshaft is "multiplied" by the final drive gears of the car. In other words, the driveshaft coming from the transmission is spinning, which produces the torque to move the car. Well, everytime that driveshaft makes a full revolution, the gears also spin in proportion. So, if you have 2.73 gears, it means the drive wheels on your car (the ones that actually get the power from the engine) spin 2.73 revolutions for every 1 spin of the driveshaft.
The numbers can be confusing, because the example I used with 2.73 is actually a HIGH gear ratio. A lower gear would be something like 4.11.
I'm not so sure a lower ratio gets you more traction, because what it does is multiply the power even more!! Sometimes you LOSE traction, because your tires can't handle the extra push, haha. Then you just BURN RUBBER baby!!
(If you hear your tires screeching, you are NOT getting traction!!!)

Depending on what kind of car you have, such as a rear wheel drive vehicle. Then your car has a rear diiferential carrier. The numerical value of a gear ratio is usuall the high ratio that gives you a quicker acceleration . Numerical number as 3:55, or 3:73 or 4:10 are the lower ratios. Numbers below 3:23 or less is a higher ratio and more deigned for highway driving and fuel economy. But for traction, you would want a posi traction style rear gears. This makes both rear tires drive the vehicle foward at the same rate and in return you have more traction to pull or tow, or better in snow and rain conditions.

4:11 positrac.....displacement to to gear ratio. revolutions .It's also good to know what horsepower motor,transmission,and purpose of the vehicle is being use. GM vehicles,I would recommend the 4:11 in most cases or 3:73.Fords probably would go 3:10 or something on that line to get more traction with most available motors .ie 289,302,347,351..
