When cold it starts first turn of the key everytime. Clutch down and no throttle. When warm ( temp. in middle of gauge ) or after at least a 6 mile drive it just keeps turning over ( clutch down and no throttle ) but allways starts 2nd turn of the key. With throttle it fires ( eventually on first turn of the key ) but has a really rough idle then dies. The car has dubious history and done 107,000 m, since ownership aprox 1 year the car has allways been run on optimax / v power. My Garage says it's the coil packs but at over £300 for 6 i want to be sure. could it be the idle control valve ? does a 2.8 have sparkplugs ? if so could it be those ? I have no mechanical brain at all and i am completely useless at DIY. Please help. . . I've been conned by garages before and don't want to fall foul again. I live just south of Newcastle under Lyme if anyone can recomend a good ( but not expensive ) garage.

I'm leaning toward an injector problem allowing gas to seep into the engine with the engine off and flooding it.

Since you say it will start with the throttle pressed down, that allows more air into the engine to dilute the gas that's puddled up in the engines intake system.

I don't have any idea on a garage for you, but if you find a good one, ask them to do a fuel system leak-down test.

It could be a faulty fuel shutoff solenoid. Or worn out injectors.

Best of luck to you.

sounds like coil pack prob to me.on a older car this fault could be due to a faulty condenser.it runs rough when restarted as it is clearing unburnt fuel
