She is 14 weeks from her last period and she took a pregnancy test 9 weeks ago and it was positive, went to ob and her uterus is small and no heartbeat, but doctor says she is wrong and that she only 6 weeks. Doc won't do any ultrasound either. anyway is back pain a sign of miscarriage? Do you think that the levels are wrong and baby is there? I think it's gone, but the doc thinks it still there. Not sure what to think. What do You think?

While some fluctuation of HCG levels can be considered normal, that kind of reading should be an alert to a possible ectopic pregnancy (outside of the uterus, usually in the tubes....also called a tubal pregnancy).

I would offer the following advice......see another doctor!! If she gets the same diagnosis, then it's probabal that she is having a miscarriage, but IF it's a tubal, then her life is in danger, and it needs medical attention immediately!!!

Better to err on the side of caution here.....almost half of all ectopic pregnancies end in the death of the woman!!

Back pain is also a sign of pregnancy. I think your friend is pregnant, and if she had a positive test 9 weeks ago, that was probably right. The issue with the doctor sounds sort of fishy. I would go to another doctor if possible and get a second opinion.

No, Im sorry. I think she has misscarried. HCG levels are very accuarte and if she is that off, them her baby probably stopped at around 6 weeks or a bit earlier.. I freaked out over this stuff and got alot of info, so it sounds not so good to me. Unless she was wrong about when she got pregnant, but if she took a pregnancy test when she first missed her period and it was positive and the HCG levels were off now, the baby probably isnt alive. Im so sorry. Best of luck to her.

The hcg level won't show you how far along you are, only an ultrasound can do that...so how does the doctor, with no ultrasound, know that she's six weeks along? This is tough because it doesn't make much sense. If she's really 14 weeks from LMP, the doctor should be hearing a heartbeat via doppler. If she's really 14 weeks from LMP and measuring six weeks via ultrasound, then something is terribly wrong and she's probably going to miscarry.

If doc think it's in there , it should be in there. hormone levels can determine pregnancy, so she may be able to hear the baby's heartbeat on the next visit. She could always consult another doctor to be sure

Blood levels could be wrong but unlikely
because she is 14 weeks past does not mean that's when she conceived it could have been later.
It could be to early for an ultra sound.
What medical experience do you have that makes you think the baby's gone.
I would tend to believe the doctor.
Try to be better support for your friend
