Psychologically, what parts of an essay would really impress a teacher aside from the words. Do cover art and report covers make a essay more appealing to a teacher before he/she reads it?

Most teachers I know have to read lots and lots of essays, so they tend to find those appealing, that are easy to read.
Aspects teachers like are a suitably wide line-spacing, a well-readable, big enough font, proper use of commas (not my forte unfortunately), wide borders for remarks and notes, organizing the text in paragraphs.
Cover art is cool and will be appreciated, if it fits with the topic of the essay, it is actually your art and not just something googled out of the Internet, and if the essay and the cover both fulfill the basic needs of good readability.

First remember what the guides where for doing the essay, make sure you follow the instructions, cover all your bases and only making a cover if it contents are related to the ideas in about the paper.

You would really impress a teacher by exercising personal integrity in researching and composing the essay. It would be refreshing to read something original for a change.

Try it old school. Get a typewriter on ebay, and bang out your essay on a monospaced font. Use lots of liquid white-out. That'll show you put in a lot of effort and didn't just copy & paste something from Wikipedia.

Typed . Double space. Bold. (It's easy to see.)
Dark blue ink instead of black. (Easier on the eyes.)
Nice eye catching report cover with color graphics relating
to report subject. (Always got me extra credit.)
