A sperm bank is a facility that collects and stores human sperm from donors, primarily for the purposes of artificial insemination. The first two sperm banks were opened in Iowa City, USA and Tokyo, Japan in 1964.

Sperm banks also allow people to choose what characteristics they want their child or children to inherit, this is an example of selective breeding.

The sperm is stored in small vials or straws of holding between 0.4-1.0 ml and frozen in liquid nitrogen tanks. There is no shelf life on sperm and there have been cases with birth of healthy babies with sperm stored for more than 20 years.

In the United States sperm banks are regulated by the FDA with new guidelines in effect May 25, 2005. There are also regulation in different states including New York and California. Outside the US, the EU is working on similar regulations as the FDA.

Using anonymous donor sperm or known donors from a sperm bank is a safe alternative. Donors are constantly tested and monitored and all sperm is stored for a minimum of 6 months without being released for sale to ensure that the donor is healthy. Donors are subject to tests for diseases such as human immunoviruses HIV-1 and HIV-2, Human T cell lymphotropic viruses, HTLV-1 and HTLV-2, Syphilis, Chlamydia, Gonorrhea, Hepatitis B, hepatitis C, Cytomegalovirus (CMV), Cystic fibrosis, Karyotyping 46, XY, and Spongiform Encephalopathy or Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease.

Yes it really does exist. Also, it really does work, even for couples where the man is not able to reproduce. You can go in and pick out the types of characteristics and stuff you would like so the baby could resemble you still. It is very safe, they have been doing this for quite awhile. My guess would be that it is not cheap. Any type of process to become pregnant that is not through the old faithful method of sex, is usually not cheap.

Those Kind of places are known as fertility clinics usually, and yes they do exist. It does usually work it all depends on how the staff and the recipient is i do believe. The donor information and the recipient information is kept secret so that nobody can go and find either person. They also do all types of screenings and so on for it. It is pretty much safe but it also depends on your outlook about the situation. I couldnt tell you how much it costs, but i have heard that it might actually be covered under health care plans. Dont know if i helped at all.

Yes, there are sperm banks; yes, it works; yes, it's safe (all samples are screened for HIV and other STDs), and yes, it's expensive. But trust me, having a baby on your own and being a single mother is *extremely* hard. Hell, even being married and having a baby is hard! Having a baby, no matter how someone chooses to do it, should *not* be taken lightly!

Its perfectly safe to use sperm from a sperm bank...its sterile, and the sperm is screened. I think that it is fairly expensive. Ask your Dr at your next visit what artificial semination costs and wher can you get it done.

Is it expensive, YES
Does it work? Yes
Do these sperm banks exist? Yes
But be very careful, at times you may end up with somebody you did not pick out sperm.

yes they exist, yes they work (how do you think people in same sex relationships get pregnant?) and I dont know how expensive it is. If your going to use it, you should budget about $800, but it would probably be more than that. They give you portfolios with information on the doners, like occupation, iq, height and weight so you can try to make your baby what you want it to look like! lol
