What type of turtle? If it is a box turtle they like to eat fruit and veggies. Just cut them in half and put them in a shallow bowl
and let it there for a while in time it will eat. I owned many at one time when I was a kid.
But, yes you can let it go as long as it was found outside then it is use to being outside and along a pond would be very nice.
Box turtles do not live in water so if it is in the tub make sure it has an area to get out of the water.
I hope it is not a snapping turtle... ????? where did your husband find it?
snapping turtles can really hurt they bite very bad and can be very mean.
you can tell a snapping turtle from a box turtle by: the shell of a snapping turtle will have ridges running down the back, it will have a pointy head and if you flip it over the shell does not cover the whole bottom like a box turtle does. (I hope all of that made sense) I will provide links for pictures hope they work.. That is if you ar enot sure what you have. Plus if the turtle stays in the water all the time it may be a snapping turtle. As before box turtles do not live in water they go in water but need to come out to land more.
and snapping turtles will eat fish and such..
if it is nice out warm yes you may want to let it go back to where it came from.. near a pond is very nice.. but please if it is a snapping one be safe do not pick it up..

if its a type of water turtle yes if its a box style turtle any woods will do. they are coming out of the ground this time of year getting ready for mating. if you want a turtle to keep it would be best to purchase a captive bred one. but many people find them and bring them to classrooms etc. without many ill effects. also he may not be accustomed to the new environment and therefor not eating. he will eventually eat though hunger will force him too. if you let him go observe him for a while and make sure he begins to venture away before you leave it will be a good sign he has sustained no trauma. don't forget to take pictures before you release him back into the wild if that is your plan.

Wild caught turtles get really, REALLY stressed by being caught. I would strongly recommend releasing it to the original site ASAP.
There are a lot of reasons this turtle might not have eaten- recently out of hibernation, cold water temps, wrong foods offered, high stress, no good lighting, etc.

If you have one, put him or her in a fish tank with a pump and strong light. Make sure you have a rock big enough so he can have a place to get totally out of the water and sun himself. When I got my turtle he came from a pond , and I couldn't get him to eat, so I tried some different foods such as: Dried blood worms(beta food) from walmart. It worked! he loved it. and I tried Baby shrimp (beta food) from Walmart. It worked to! So good luck with you turtle and don't forget to wash out that bathtub really good! :-)

Just tell your husband to eat something. I don't know why he would stop eating just because he found a turtle. Was it a Ninja Turtle?

It needs a tank with plenty of water an area that it can get out of water and a heat lamp, you should feed it aquatic plants and live food like feeder fish and earth worms, if he will not eat or you cannot provide him everything that he needs then you should release him whee you found him

Let him go where you found him and if you want a turtle, buy one at a reptile show or a reputable reptile store. Don't buy from pet stores....they notoriously buy wild caught animals that don't thrive in captivity.

Turtles eat dark green veggies; kelp, peppers, collard greens. Try those.
