Tongue piercings do not cause any sort of illnesses. People invent all sorts of rumors...cancer, tumors etc...NOT true. They use the same surgical stainless steel in the barbells as they do for sugical pins or staples or rods that stay PERMANENTLY in the human body. No worries.

Cancer
From BME Encyclopedia
Jump to: navigation, search
Some people have suggested that the minor irritation and foreign substance of body piercing and implants could lead, in the long term, to an increased risk of cancer in the modified area. While there may be fictional theoretical anecdotes illustrating this, there is no evidence supporting this theory.
In fact, virtually all legitimate studies have shown not only no increase in cancer rates, but have actually indicated a decreased risk of cancer from procedures such as breast implants. This decrease is believed to be in part from the slightly enhanced immune system response due to the foreign body, and in part from the pressure of the implant limiting blood flow to the potential tumors (which are very oxygen-hungry). It is not unreasonable that the same would apply to some smaller extent with smaller implants.
Note: Certain components of stainless steel alloy indeed are carcinogenic and/or mutagenic (specifically nickel and chromium).

Hi there! Without a doubt it can be worse than that, on account that you will get lung cancer. I believe there probably a danger, considering that there is an opening on your tongue. Simply stop smoking man! Ruins your existence and your money! And it tastes like **** as far as the quitters say! You must google in "what are reasons for smoking", and then you may need to stop. Man, smoking is dangerous! So discontinue!

tongue, piercings do not cause cancer, ive had mine for two years and i know other people who have tongue piercings that dont have cancer.
i know your friend didn't get cancer from his/her piercing because cancer is a slow killer, it would take more than a week to die from it.
just make sure you research the place where you plan to get your tongue peirced. it should be a clean reputable establishment. and it would be helpful if you knew someone who has done their piercing their too. quit fretting.
Good Luck!

My uncle's sisters friends cousin got gonnorrhea AND cancer from piercing his tongue. So its definately true. Its really common too. I know like 6 people personally that have died shortly after piercing their tongue. Of course they died on a bus accident on the freeway, but I am convinced it was somehow related. BE CAREFUL.

I'm so sorry about your friend. I've never heard of such a thing. Maybe your friend got a rare allergic reaction. I had a tongue piercing for many years and just recently took it off. I can't tell you how many times I bit down on the barbell ball by mistake. Talk about chipping my molars. Clumsy me. That's about as bad as it got for me. I took the barbell off about a month ago. The hole is sealed as if I never had one. Can't say I miss biting into it. LOL

Cancer is caused by the growth of cells. when you peirce your tounge, your body has to regernate cells to replace what has been taken. If your body is naturally cancerous or you have a history, or a reaction to whatever you put in it, its a chance. I'd say slim though. I have to say on the fray, that's so 10 years ago.. find a new fad.
