how does a idle air control work?i have a 1988 olds 3.8,and when its warm outside does it still suppose to idle up and then idle back down,or does it just does that when its cold outside?my check engine light doesnt come on,but i was just wondering if its suppose to work like that.

it is suppose to work like that.
when the engine is cold(below 180 degrees) does not burn the fuel, very efficient ,and has the tendency to stall,so the choice is high RPM.

Idle control motor should work all the time - it will adjust the idle where the ECM (engine control module) needs it to.

theres 2 type of idlve valve .. thermostat style and electronic valve type.. both depends on the water temp in your car.. not the outside temp.. thats why with some cars you can see a small water hose goin inside/out the throttle body, .. fuel cant vaporise if the engine temp is cold thats why it draws more air to make it leaner.. lean coumbustion is hotter
