I mean come on! Derek's mentioned it a couple of times, that she's a good swimmer, and NOBODY even had her go through counseling? I'm surprised the Chief let her back so quickly.
I hope they (Derek and Merideth) talk about this in the next week or two.

Ok, so a full half of the answers I've gotten don't seem to think that "giving up" is a thinly veiled phrase for committing suicide. If you don't fight to live, you die. If you don't fight to live, when you're physically able to, you're attempting suicide. I'm not saying it didn't make for a facinating episode, but if ABC left as many viewers (half) with the impression that "giving up" isn't a suicide attempt then it did more harm than good.

Derek knows in his heart that she just gave up. Meredith admitted that when she was talking to Denny. I'm sure we haven't heard the end of it because Derek does keep bringing it up and Meredith keeps making those dead mother comments. The writers on the show know what they're doing-that way we keep tuning in week after week. They like to draw out their plots but eventually everything gets solved.

She didn't really commit suicide...she was just thinking about all the bad things that were going on in her life and decided that it wasn't worth the fight. It wasn't suicide, just a sort of giving up in a situation where if you fight you live and if you don't you die.

Good question. You know, I was wondering that same thing last night. I hope they do address it, in whatever way. I also want to know what people think about Callie and George. How will she find out?

I don't think she was trying to kill herself, I think she just "let go"... she didn't set out to die, but the situation gave her opportunity to just stop and see what happened... I thought it was weird that she was back to work so soon too, they didn't really say there was any time in between.
I do love Grey's though.
