Republicans and Democrats are polar opposite on many issues.

Republicans:

1. Believe that a free-market economy should fund the government.
2. Believe in limited government.
3. Are generally pro-life.
4. Generally will cut taxes.

Democrats:
1. Believe that taxation should fund the government.
2. Beleive that the government has the responsibility to help the people.
3. Are generally pro-choice.
4. Generally will raise taxes.

A person certainly does not have to believe EVERYTHING that the party has to say on a certain subject. Many people are moderate and believe in some of both parties.

It's best to choose the candidate that shares your beliefs (theoritically regardless of their political party).

Like most other things the definitions have been blurred.

In the past a Republican and a Democrat were both generally conservatives. The difference lay in where they thought control of the purse strings needed to be.

Democrats thought everything should be controlled from DC.

Republicans thought everything should be controlled at the lowest level possible.

Then there came the 'new' liberal ideas into the mix. There were more Democrats who embraced these new ideas than Republicans. But there were Repuplicans who sided with them and out of those ideas came the concepts of racial equality and equality of the sexes. And those weren't bad ideas.

Of late the liberal wing of the Democrat party has over-ridden the conservatives and moderate members and the Democrats power started to wane. The Democrats lost the 'solid south'. They lost both houses of Congress and then the Presidency.

Democrats have taken back Congress. But not with liberal Democrats but by beating the Republicans at their own game. They won with moderate and conservative Democrats beating out incumbent Republicans. It remains to be seen if Democrats have learned their lesson well enough. Democrats can be in charge --But not if they become too liberal in the ideas they push.

I'm only going to answer the last couple of questions that you asked.

No, nobody at all is ever required to believe in everything that "your party" stands for. Indeed, the vast majority of members of the two parties have demonstrated that they do not vote with their party 100% of the time. That can be easily discerned by looking at the voting records of members of Congress. Congressional Quarterly publishes certain kinds of scores for all members of Congress including "party unity scores." A party unity score reveals what percentage of the time an individual votes with members of their own party.

I'm far from certain just what you are asking when you say "what does that person do?" They don't have to "do" anything.

I cut and pasted this list of Republican principles from the website show below. The party does not require everyone to uphold every one of them, and allows for divergence of opinions. There are both conservative and liberal members of the Republican party, and members often have opposing views on specific issues, but these are what they hold as basic values:

We declare that the following are foundational principles in the perpetual earthly fight for freedom:

1. To humbly seek the Divine guidance of Almighty God, our Creator.

2. Defend all innocent life, the born and the unborn.

3. Support and defend the constitutions of our state and nation, including all of the Bill of Rights, against all enemies both foreign and domestic.

4. Recognize an individual’s rights and responsibilities.

5. Support constitutionally limited government.

6. All tax increases should be opposed until the tax burden is only what is required to support the government’s constitutional responsibilities.

7. A market driven economic system.

8. A judiciary branch that rules justly while recognizing its restrained constitutional role as only an applicator of the law to the circumstances brought before it for consideration.

9. Defend marriage as the union of one man and one woman, the traditional family as the foundational building block of our society and recognizing parent’s God given rights, especially to direct their children’s education.

10. Protect private property rights.

I would decribe Republicans as people that want to stick to core values, to tried-and-true methods. Democrats tend to want to experiment, see if something works better. In times of uncertainty, people want to stick to methods that have been proven to work, and so vote conservatively. When the world situation is fairly stable, people are willing to experiment, and so vote liberally.

The difference between democrats and republicans is two letters. Other than that, everything is basically the same.

Are you from the U.S? If not...youre so lucky....Do you know who the President of the US is?.....He-Is-a-REPUBLICAN!!! We are in rotten shape. Jobs are scarce. Taxes are killing us. There is a WAR on. Gas prices are sky-high. This is a Republican.
A Democrat, if he/she is decent tries to help or LISTEN to the average working class person and minorities. And no you dont have to agree with them or anything. And I dont know how many there are in the world but there are TOO many Republicans.

Democrats believe the government should take our money and hand it out as they see fit. Republicans believe one should keep their money and use it or hand it out as one sees fit.
