This is a very good question!

I actually think that "Jaws" the movie was better than the book, something you'll very rarely hear me say. It's just that books and movies are two different art forms and it's hard to bridge that gap.

There are several others that deserve a mention: Gone with the Wind, Shawshank Redemption (from a short story, no less), Bridge to Terabitha (which I have not seen, but when the author says that the movie IS her book, I have to take that as the definitive word on the subject), and, while some people disagree, I thought Lord of the Rings did a fairly good job of bringing a complex tale to the screen. They did have to do some adding and subtracting to make it flow, but did so well, in my opinion.

I would have to say close call between Lord of the Rings and Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe. I would say also, the first and second Harry Potter movies, after that, the movies could have portrayed the book more without making it more than three minutes longer.

The Maltese Falcon - based on the book by that master of detective noir fiction Dashiell Hammett. Classic book, classic movie. Sam Spade was brilliantly brought to life by the late great Humphrey Bogart. Not to be missed (the book or the movie) Pax - C.

Far from the madding crowd by Thomas Hardy - the film starred Julie Christie, Alan Bates, Terence Stamp and Peter Finch. Brilliant.

lord of the rings trilogy. a fanstastic achievement although not complete by the books standards, how many people have now read the books as a result of seeing these movies. i have for one but would never have considered reading such long books unless i was so mesmerised by the movies.

I have to agree with some of the others - The Green Mile (book by Stephen King) is the closest adaptation.

Gone with the wind.

I read Lord of the Rings, but when I went to the movie - could have been III or IV - I felt I only understood it because I'd read the book. I only go to the cinema with my daughter, who has also read the book and she agreed with me.
