From a news article: "Menu Foods last week recalled "cuts and gravy" style dog and cat food. The recall sparked concern among pet owners across North America. It includes food sold under store brands carried by Wal-Mart, Kroger, Safeway and other large retailers, as well as private labels such as Iams, Nutro and Eukanuba."

I want to feed my cat high-quality cat food. But this recall has given me the feeling that they are making the same food and slapping different labels on them. Am I wrong to think this?

They are not the same - there are 3 really big canning firms that do almost 100% of all canned pet food in North America. Each company makes its own formula and then contracts with the cannery to produce and can it. The common thread between Nutro and all the others is a common ingredient. Just for the record, Menu produces other top shelf brands that were not affected because they don't use wheat gluten which is an inexpensive filler. Nutro is certainly not a bad food but there are others of far higher quality. With respect to food for cats and dogs, corn wheat and soy should be avoided entirely but that is especially true for cats which are obligate carnivores.

Because there is no profit in it. These companies generally sell their products straight from their website as well as to select retailers, usually boutique stores or smaller specialized chains like Pet Supplies Plus. There is very minimal markup if sold in a store or online, but a mass retailer like Wal-Mart would need a markup of a considerable percentage, like 15%-30% to make it worth having on the shelves. They can't sell it for that much because no one will buy it at the price. Plus, the kind of people that shop at Wal-Mart generally think that Ol' Roy and Pedigree is fine food and won't buy a more expensive food, never mind that it will give their dog a better quality of life. That's my take, anyways.

Check out this list to see if the ones you use are listed: http://www.menufoods.com/recall/product_cat.html

I also feed my cats Nutro, but since ours is dry and not on that list it has been fine.
