I think a classic book has to stand the test of time. It never loses its appeal from one generation to the next. It's unique , is of high quality, and has lasting significance.

Define Classic Book

Classic has many definitions. I believe classic means anything that comes back from time to time, like Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier or Pride and Prejudice and Oliver Twist. And of course the ancient classics by Plato and Socrates.

The stories not only stand the test of time, but they become treasured among people who read a lot and those who read a little.

It must be well written, have a wide readership and have stood the test of time. Here is a list from a publisher which I believe only publishes books which have already enjoyed some success. As you see, the list moves from ancient works of Greek and Roman authors to twentieth century works which enjoy a place among the classics. http://www.penguinclassics.co.uk/nf/shared/WebDisplay/0,,215217_1_0,00.html
The accepted meaning of classic is that it doesn't go out of fashion.
