It really depends on the size of your school and the sport. Talk to the coach if you are in doubt. Some teams would love to have an athletic person try out even if they don't know the sport well, other teams don't have time to teach anyone the basics, even if they have the athletic ability but lack knowledge and experience.

I worried about this in high school and wouldn't try out because I wasn't into many organized sports in my younger years, though I played a lot of sandlot football and baseball. When I played pick-up games against varsity players, I was playing on their level, so I might have made a team if I had tried. Also, if you aren't talking about one of the really popular sports (football, soccer, basketball, baseball), they may need the help of any athlete they can get (does anyone play field hockey or wrestle before high school?) Talk to the coach, he'll let you know if you have a shot at making the team.

i don't think so, just a basic understanding of the game and a joy for playing the game. Enjoy what you do.
