Hi, I'm a guy in the UK, I usually like to look at people in streets and other places out of habit I guess. I notice in the place where I am (London) that it seems like striped clothing is becoming more and more popular. Interestingly, they're striped clothes for different subcultures ie: thin-nautical for indie, thick and contrasting for emo/rock cultures and an assortment of thick horizontal designs for 'chavvy' style. I know that this has been noticable since the beginning of last summer but it seems like stripes are going to last forever.

is stripes the new jeans?

I am studying to become a fashion designer so let me take a shot at this. I think that to define a trend you can either look at it locally or internationally. Stripes has always been a big thing in the UK, with people like Kate MOss and Sienna Miller supporting the trend. It could just be that other subcultures in the UK are adapting the trend to suit their own tastes.
In north america Stripes seem to be a symbol of punk rockers (ei Avril Lavigne) who like the black and white stripped look.
However with the new swing into the 60's look these past few seasons (geometrics, bold prints, minis) stripes could very well last a while.

Well, I wouldn't say new jeans, but I've also noticed that clothes with stripes seem to be popular nowadays, particularly since last spring. I also own a few striped pieces of clothing - a t-shirt and a dress for instance. I like it, it somehow manages to draw the attention of passers-by to the people who wear them... ;o)

I love stripes. They are not as loud as other patterns, say plaid, but they add oomph to an outfit that you could never get with even the brightest solid color.
Like you said there are different ways you can wear them and you can even use them to help you appear thinner (by wearing vertical stripes for example). I think stripes are great and I know I will be wearing them probably forever!

here in the U.S. people wear a lot of stripes with layers like a striped sweater then a cami under it. I would say stripes is definatly the new jeans.

stripes was totally in and next its prob gonna be the whole sailor thing sooo even though strips seemed to be a big hit i don't think it will stick around as long as jeans.

is stripes the new jeans?
no.

But it is fashionable and stylish. I like to see a guy in a polo or a button-up striped shirt.

And I wear stripes myself. :)

(But it everybody else is wearing it.... why not wear something different, be your own person, and stand out?)
