That's how I think of babies. Not as viruses per se, but as parasites.
But the main reason I answered is because I caught a bit of South Park last night. They were portraying head lice kind of like that - as people whose world was in trouble.
Not sure what the moral of the story was because I didn't watch the whole thing.

I don't have an answer for you but that is a good question. I am sure that there are larger and more advanced populations on other planets out there, so who is to say what our purpose is here on earth.
