i worked at a tanning salon for 7 years. So i know a thing or 2 about tanning. Lets get a few things clear first. If you are following the Recommendations of the Tanning Salon you would know that it is best to tan every other day. It takes the body 24 to 36 hours for the effects of the tanning booths to have the best effect. The same is true for tanning outdoors. As for the self bronzers i know people that swear by them but it is indeed a fake tan and offers your body no resistance against the harmful UV rays. A true tan is way better for your body. If you burn at all you should wait until you are fully healed until you start tanning again. In all reality tanning in a tanning salon is way safer then tanning outdoors because you are in a controlled environment. The people that get skin cancer from tanning salons are the ones that do not follow the advice of the salon, or get addicted to sun tanning. If you use the proper lotions, dont tan more then once a day but every other day, your body will naturaly build up a great color and help you from getting skin cancer. Its the people that tan at multiple salons a day or steal tanning sessions by reseting the both beyond its recomended time they are the ones that get the cancer.

Ok some of these answers I find quite funny, 1. Self tanning lotions don't attracted more UV lights 2. You don't lock your self into tanning beds, they're times and after usually 10-20 minutes it turns off. I use both, tanning in the beds is quicker and it makes sure its an all over tan. the graduale tanning lotions are my favorite, this way the more you use it the tanner you become over time, it looks more natural then the other tanning lotions, just look at target or victoria secret for teh tanning lotions. When i go into the beds though i either cover my face or use a high SPF on my face and chest because you can use bronzer to darken those areas so you don't get as many wrinkles when your older. So i would say a combination of both works!

I would think that if you're going to the tanning bed 3 times per week, you wouldn't need any self-tanner. Depending on your skin type, you should be pretty brown in a few weeks , then just go to the tanning bed once a week to maintain. I have a pool and I start using self tanners in May, then in June when the pool is opened I get out and beef up the tan with the real thing. I dont do tanning beds anymore.

If you're going three days/week, then you probably don't need the self tanner, that seems a little bit like over-kill. You should be plenty tan by June with the tanning bed alone. BUT make sure you moisturize your skin every single day with a good lotion. Dry skin will tan unevenly and have a funky orange-y color; well-moisturized skin will tan evenly and have a more natural color.
Another tip: change your position on the tanning bed once in a while: that way your tan will be even - no white stripes on your sides or under your arms.
AND be sure to cover your hair with a bandana or something - the tanning bed will dry your hair just like the sun

I was going to the tanning bed every other day last year. Then I ran in to my friend's mother who used to tan all the time. She looked about 80 - she's only 50-something. The sun has left her looking like a worn leather riding saddle.
I stopped tanning and now use either Vaseline or Olay self-tanning lotion right when I get out of the shower. I look just as tan using lotion as when I was using the bed. It's safer and my skin is really moisturized. Try it--they even have self tanning lotions specifically for the face. Save your skin!

3 days a week is SO unhealthy. I don't know what tanning salon recommended that to you, but I know most reputable, responsible places would not recommend more than 1-2 times every TWO weeks. You're going to get skin cancer in 10 years if you keep that up.

stop stop stop using the tanning bed!!!

recent studies have shown that use of a tanning bed is just as bad if not worse than getting sun without using a sunscreen with regards to malignant melanoma (skin cancer).

if you are using spray or rub on self tanners, that should be sufficient to color your skin without damaging it beyond repair. other than that - please use a sun screen!

Yes, you will be darker, but skip using the self-tanner. Combining two bronzers is never a good idea. Make sure you moisturize!
