I don't know if it will take a way from the other places, I would go to both myself. The views are diffrent depending where you are. However there is more to do than just walk on the Skywalk. The Skywalk is located on the Hualapai nation reservation. They have several things to do there plus you can learn about the Native Americans in this country. I know that people are talking about how it is a gimmick, or how they are milking people for their money but, these people have been ripped off their whole lives! I think it is great that they saw an opprotunity to educate us on their culture and give us a great view at the same time. I would check out all that the reservation has to offer, people should want to go there for more than just the Skywalk. I have listed some info below and also included some websites. I hope this helps you.
S k y w a l k more details
The vision of the Skywalk was to enable visitors to walk beyond the canyon walls, becoming surrounded by the Grand Canyon while standing at the edge of the Glass Bridge.
This Glass Bridge suspends more than 4,000 feet above the Colorado River on the very edge of the Grand Canyon's West Rim
Finding a balance between form, function and nature, the bridge gives us a chance to share the wonder of the canyon that the Hualapai Tribe has graciously offered.

The Grand Canyon Resort Corporation (owned entirely by the Hualapai Tribe) is excited to announce the introduction of a new amenity to Grand Canyon West. An addition of an authentic Indian Village is now open. The Village consists of five smaller villages depicting not only the Hualapai Tribe, but three other Arizona Tribes and tipis that represent many Plains Indian Tribes. The dwellings have been constructed authentically by representatives of each Nation and each village will include a wealth of stories and authentic displays. The North Rim Grand Canyon, S. Rim Grand Canyon, and the newest destination - Grand Canyon West and the Skywalk all are very different attractions.
The Grand Canyon West of course will have the Skywalk though you don't hear much about all the other activities. You can camp inside the Grand Canyon near Diamond Creek. This is an hour drive from the Hualapai Lodge in Peach Springs, Arizona.
You also can camp in Havasupai Canyon! This is a choice destination for camping and swimming deep inside the reservation.

I worry about the Grand Canyon Skywalk.
Early on in development I heard a lot of rumors about safety concerns and what-not. Not sure about the validity of them though. It doesn't "look" safe, but I'm no engineer.
Also, last I heard (about a week ago), the Contractor and Developer were argueing over who had to pay for Insurance. And I doubt the Indian Reservation will front the money for that... but you never know.
On top of that, there is some guy who owns a huge piece of land of the 25ish miles between I-40 and the Indian Reservation. He doesn't like people driving down the road across his property to get to the Skywalk. I've heard he's been putting broken glass and nails on the road to "discourage" people from driving on his property. Some of the Las Vegas Tour buses refuse to drive to the Skywalk because of this. Sometimes the Indians will bring these very old school buses to pickup tour groups going to the Skywalk area.
That and $25 per head to step onto the Skywalk as compared to $25 per vehicle to get into the Grand Canyon National Park with 30 miles of the best viewpoints of the Grand Canyon. I personally don't think it's a contest. But then again, the Skywalk is getting a whole lot of advertising and most people don't know any better so who knows.

I will bet for a while it will, however it is new. Novelty will wear off after a while. There are plenty more attactions at the Grand Canyon than standing on the skywalk. Helicopter tours, mule rides, river tours, and all sorts of other areas for tourists to explore. The skywalk is not going to monopolize the tourism at the Grand Canyon.
The skywalk is a one trick pony if you ask me. Pretty darned cool trick, but It will probably give a person about half an hour (at most) of fascination. People will get bored with it pretty quickly and want to move on. It is not something that will keep them there all day.
