Congrats for you and your baby!
You will definitely need the necessities like 'eat', 'milk', and 'full'. Then choose 2 or 3 of your baby's favorite things such as "dog", "teddy bear/doll", whatever your baby loves.
Our son signed 'doggie' at 5 months old, so YES they can understand!
Here is more info for you:

Good luck and keep at it! :-)

I didnt teach my children sign language, it really wasn't a big thing when mine were small 8 years ago. BUT my sister-in-law taught my nephew to sign (baby sign) and I always thought it was delaying his speech. I was so wrong! My nephew is 20 months old and he signs and speaks. He is talking so much more than my neighbor's child that is 1 day older than him. It amazes me how well he repeats EVERYTHING that you say and knows most of the signs for the words that he uses. I believe my sister-in-law let him watch the baby sign videos and he picked most of it up from the videos. Apparently TV isn't all bad for your baby because he can already help you count to 10 and say the beginning of his ABC's. So teach your baby all you can teach!!!

I wouldn't use too many at 8 months old. Just introduce the basics and work on those until your baby is old enough or starts doing more activities. I would start with eat, drink, play, and/or things like that.

Cool question! I am a student of ASL, in my 4th year. Are you signing English or ASL (different grammer and syntext then English so you cant speak English while signing)? If English, my suggestion would be to sign while speaking. If ASL, then I would start with things like animals, and foods. Kids pick this up amazingly fast! I'm not a teacher but my experience is that you cant give them too many!

Babies learn sooo fast. Teach as many as you can fit into the day. Just use them and he will pick them up. When trying to teach any language the best way is to use it all of the time. Good luck.

However many you want. The most important thing to do is to use them all the time, and be patient, since it can take months before your baby will use them back.

I just work in a few here and there whenever I can, and try to be consistent. As long as you're demonstrating it, they'll eventually get the hang of it.

As many as you can keep track of. Babies are SOOOOOOO much smarter than anyone ever gives them credit for. I'm surprised one of 'em hasn't cured cancer yet!! They're smart, they can keep up.
