I liked both bands but i liked the smiths but the cure was more commercially popular. The smiths caused up astir with their "the queen is dead album" good tunes.

The Cure was more popular in the mainstream and MTV, but the Smiths also had quite a following. Both groups were very good, I liked both. I got to see the Smiths in concert once, unfortunately never got to see the Cure.

More popular? The Cure has the edge. They had appeal on both sides of the Atlantic. The Smiths had a mainly UK following.

In The UK they were both huge in the 80s but probably more so The Cure.
I think Morrisey was a more esoteric opposite to Robert Smith's goth gloom character and recently Morrisey has had somewhat of a resurgence but The Cure has been going strong making excellent records their whole career. "Disintegration" is one of the 80's greatest release and it came out in '89!

the answer is probably the cure as far as who was more popular, but if you ask who had (has) a more profound influence on the genre I think it would go to the Smiths (IMO).
