Firstly,clear your cache-tools-internet options-general-delete temp files and cookies.

Next run a spyware clean like spybot or adaware,spyware really slows you down.

Then run a virus scan,free from avg.

If all else fails do a defrag,start-all programmes-accesories-system tools-defrag.

good luck

The best way is to download Ccleaner here http://bitly.com/UrALrK

Or you can go on Windows operating system locate the command prompt and go there to do the following:
Create a Recovery file of system and date it today.

Then begin by;
delete the 'Temp' folders..they have hidden subfolders so you need to set the attributes in order to bypass this. For each subfolder delete all cookies and rubbish left behnd after install-uninstalled programs. Do a 'dir' command to check your progress. Make sure the 'Temp' file is empty.

goto c:\windows\prefetch and delete everything in there..no exceptions

goto c:\windows folder and delete all the '$' files that have been installed by updates. They can all be succesfully deleted and just take up disk space.

Locate the Internet Temporary Files..Check to see how high the saving level is..some have it set at 30 days..but that stores faaaar tooo much data..though it slows down the system overal. Keep this to a minimum..suggest 2 or 5 at most.

Delete all 'cookies' all those you don't need.

Locate the windows directory and go through the folders you know and those you don't need. Check this once a week at least. Some programs will install under XP as NT and older systems where there is no check of systems weight.

Check to see that system files have not changed since last booting. Things like .ini files or .bat are important items.

Check for 'Hidden Directories' all over the disk...do this at the command prompt:

dir *.* /ah wil show these hidden directories

Check the 'dir' command for all parameters

Hi, system restore will definetly NOT improve your pc's performance!!!!!!!!!!! try uninstalling some unused software, search for spyware, i suggest malwarewipe (.com), and go to start-run, and type msconfig (manual startup configuration), and you'll see some tabs like services, startup.....etc from here you can edit the things that start up along with your OS, and you can certainly remove some of the processes............ this improved my pc A LOT!!!!!! As for your programs, if you use sys restore (though I suggest you disable it from Control Panel, System, System restore tab....... cause it slows your hard drive A LOT!!!!!!!!!!!!!) I can't guarantee that they will work, or that you will still have them installed, and if your windows did not work well at the time you made the restore point, I suggest not using it at all!!!! if u want an even better performance, go to the same System app in the Control Panel, and go to the Advanced tab, and click the Settings from Performance, and select the effects for the best performance......... GOOD LUCK

System restore only takes care of old settings restore, but will do lilttle help on improving system performance.

Items you must try:

+ Defragment your HD
+ AV diagnostics
+ Anti-Spyware diagnostics
+ Uninstalling unnecessary programs
+ Check the MSCONFIG tool (Run, msconfig) and see which programs are being loaded on boot process and take some of them out.
WARNING, if you do not know how to deal with the MSCONFIG, better not try it unless you know what you are doing, it can led to system problems.

system restore will only work if you created a restore point or a rescue disc when you first got the machine. you must check for viruses first and try typing msconfig in the run box and shutting down all programs that start on start up and run in the background.also try a disc clean up and disc defragment from system tools and acsessories before doing anything.

Microsoft are normally really helpful in such matters:
This may look like a small answer but please note the link below:
http://www.microsoft.com/atwork/getstarted/speed.mspx
It is a very helpful feature with four methods to speed up your pc. It has pictures as well to show you what to do.

I would also like to point out that system restore is not normally used to speed up a pc system.

System Restore won't help, I'd turn it off then virus scan!

Run your anti virus and anti spyware in Safe Mode. To get into Safe Mode repeatedly press the F8 key after the bios screen loads but before Windows loads. You'll know if you made it because the screen will be at 800 x 600 and your pc will be slow.

Its easier to prevent malware getting on to your sytem in the first place rather than trying to remove it. All the following programs are free for home use;

You need to install one firewall.The Windows firewall doesn't stop malware on your pc from dialling out.
http://www.comodogroup.com/ - Comodo firewall.

You need to install one anti virus;
http://free.grisoft.com/freeweb.php/doc/2/ -AVG anti virus or
http://www.avast.com - Avast Antivirus

http://www.bitdefender.co.uk/site/Main/view/Download-Free-Products.html - Bitdefender 8 doesn't run in the background and can be used as a second back up anti virus.

You need all these anti spyware programs;
http://www.ewido.net - AVG(Ewido) anti trojan.
http://www.safer-networking.org - Spybot Search and Destroy anti spyware. Use the Teatimer settings to protect Internet Explorer, and the Immuniser to stop malware getting on your pc.
Spywareblaster works with Internet Explorer and Firefox. It won't uninstall spyware that is already on your pc, but it will prevent hijacks and other malicious changes to your browser.
http://www.javacoolsoftware.com
Plus;
http://www.lavasoft.com - Ad-Aware SE Personal anti adware

And these are useful utilities;
http://www.mozilla.com/ - Firefox web browser.
https://addons.mozilla.org/search.php?q=ad+block&type=A&app=firefox - Adblock Plus
http://www.ccleaner.com - Cr*pcleaner Registry cleaner and privacy tool
Winpatrol is a handy utility that manages cookies on your pc and stops unwanted changes to your startup folder.
http://www.winpatrol.com
http://www.siteadvisor.com -MacAffee Site Advisor warns about malware on sites you are about to visit.

http://spywarewarrior.com/rogue_anti-spyware.htm - The Spyware Warrior site identifies fake anti spyware programs.
https://www.grc.com - Shields Up security site, check your firewall works.
https://www.grc.com/x/ne.dll?bh0bkyd2

Remember to update and run all of you anti malware programs at least once a week.

-Scan, then reboot in normal mode.
-Use Winpatrol to stop all your software loading on Startup, leave Windows and your security software but stop stuff like your office suite. It all uses RAM even when you're not using the program! You can still access the programs from the Start menu.
-Then use Ccleaner, use the ISsues tool, then the Cleaner.
-Then defragment your hard drive from Start - programs - accessories - system tools - disc defragmenter.
Finally, restart and see if its any better.

I don't think system restore would help... but it might help to delete unwanted things to save memory, that was the cause of my old comuter :). If you defragment once a week while you are at work then it will probably help (it won't do anything if you don't do regularly)

if you have installed and uninstalled a lot of stuff, you could have a cluttered registry.... the way MS implemented the registry is ridiculously inefficient.

you can back up your data, and note your customised settings for programs ... then wipe the disk and reinstall everything that you actually use from scratch. you will normally find this spring cleaning speeds things up a lot, but it does take a lot of time to do and you do need to have your system disks and sources for whatever drivers your PC needs.
