i believe what happens is that all of the conferences get a lump sum at the begining of the tourney. as a school in a particular conference progresses that pool of money increases un till that school either wins the tourney or gets knocked our. once the tourney is over the money is handed out to the conferences and then its up to the conference to pay out to the schools for their participation or it can be kept in a rainy day fund for the schools use when they need it . im not positive about this but i believe that i was told once by a pac 10 official that this is how it works.

I believe that school's get money to go towards scholarships in the athletic departments by tournaments sponsors. I do know that coaches get bonuses depending on how far they advance in the tournament despite a lost when they get there. Don't know where the money comes from though. I heard some coaches are expecting up to $400,000 bonus for making it to the final four. Also, the coaches pay might rise by the athletic department because a winning team helps with recruiting. This is all I know.Hope you find your answer
