Snakes can smell water and use their tongue to taste the air also to see if they are near water.

The snake uses its tongue to sample it's environment. It does not "smell" as such but uses an organ called the Jacobsens Organ in the roof of it's mouth. It's tongue picks up tiny molecules in the air and deposits them into this organ, and it this way senses or "smells " the world around it ;-)
