See if this works:

Right-click on MY COMPUTER and select Properties.

Click on the Hardware tab.

Click on DEVICE MANAGER.

Click on the + that is next to DVD/CD-ROM and right click on our DVD drive and select UNINSTALL.

Reboot. Windows will reload the drivers.

First try to cd boot the drive... If your bios is enabled correctly you should be able to stick a windows cd in there and start to boot from it...
DON'T RELOAD WINDOWS... IT'S JUST A TEST that will tell you wheter or not it's a problem with your windows install or driver install.

If the cd boots and you've double checked your bios settings it's likely a problem in windows... if the drive flashes alot and you can hear it spin up and down trying to figure out what's in it but it still won't run try very gently... with a cotton swab or lens cleaner.. rub cleaning or rubbing alcohol on the laser...
If none of that works it's the hardware in the drive and it's less expensive in the long run just to get a new drive.

My money is on the drive.
Best place to get a new one is of course e-bay or an auction site. Find a laptop with a busted screen that's been parted out and make sure they sell the cd rom with it. You can also try buying another brand's cd rom if your is incased in a "caddy". (A tray used to fit the cd-rom into the compaq) Many laptops use a standard sized cd-rom nowadays coupled with a caddy and a custom bevel (the plastic front of the cdrom) that can all very carefully be removed and put on a new unit.

I hope that helps.

Might be a loose connection. Laptop optical drives are often removeable. Try pushing the drive into the laptop a little and see if it connects. Also, check "My Computer" to be sure that windows is actually seeing the drive. Check to see if the cd/dvd is spinning up also when it is inserted (you should hear it spin). And of course, check for any scratches on the discs.

Are you certain it is related to the drive? Have you installed anything or changed anything in your settings recently? If so, you may be able to perform a system restore... you could also attempt going to Control Panel-System-Hardware-Device Manager and delete the entry for the drive... then shut down and restart to see if the device was recognized on restart.

Sounds like that's the problem actually. CD drives and Hard Drives do indeed die out over time.
