I am 16 years old and work at a restaraunt as a dishwasher - I keep telling myself that this is only temporary until I become a host at said restaraunt, but I get the feeling that due to sexism with those kind of positions, that a girl will get the job before me.

Anyhow, I work from 5:00 p.m. well into the night, usually not getting off until 12:30 or even 1:00 in the morning. I work only 2 nights a week but these nights seem to go by so ridiculously slow.

How can I make these 8-hour nights go by faster? It's so hard for a 16-year-old to go to school all day and then have to come to work and scrub dishes for such a long period of time. What can I do to get through these nights, and how can I make them go by miraculously fast?

Also, how can I make the days I'm NOT working go by really slow?

I do listen to the radio, but don't think I'm allowed to bring an mp3 player, as I wouldn't be able to hear them call me when they need something immediately. And the owner told me I could be a host as soon as a position opened up, I just don't think it will happen because they always put girls as hostesses.

In reponse to Martini3: No, my hours are within labor laws, as labor laws don't apply if there is no school the following day. Since I work Friday and Saturday nights, this is all within labor laws. However, I -am- supposed to get an uninterrupted meal break every 4 hours, which I do not get. I just don't want to complain and seem like a pain in the butt to deal with.

Bring a tape/mp3 player and listen to books on tape. That should help pass the time. Hook these up to external speakers so you can still hear.

You aren't likely to go from dishwasher to host. You'll have better luck moving to prep cook (since you may already be doing some of it.)

As for your days off, pack in lots of activities that you want/need to do.

Isn't there a law about under 16 working past certain hours? I would check on that. Host is bottom of the barrel for the employees upfront. It would be more like moving sideways than moving up the ladder. Also, if your that bored at work ask people around you if they need help. Don't just think that if your done with a load, you can stand around. The bosses might like the helpfulness from you and it might stand out.

** I was actually referring to curfew laws. Here it is 10 pm for anyone under 18. Job or not.

I used to do dishes at a fast food restaurant. I seem to remember just getting lost in my thoughts about friends, family, my future, and what I plan to do with my time off from work.
