A simple answer really - but a good question:

Touch Screen technology work on the process of:

Laser

Lasers are in a sense are spread over the screen of a touch screen computer. When an object, such as a finger interferes with the laser, the position is provided to the computer in the form of co-ordinates.

Of course there is much more too it that than but lets take lttle baby steps first.

Primarily our screens are not touch screen as they do not have the correct hardware, by this I mean the lasers.
A lot of software is need as well.

All of this can be bought however, even Dell offer the technology, but at a price, you are looking at £2000.

Because you didn't purchase a computer with touch screen capabilities. They are available, and Apple is one of the first companies to have computers available with touch screen.

You can purchase a touch screen. It just is not price wise a good decision. Also think about how some people have thier hands around the computers, the regular monitors are bad enough.

making a touch screen is hard... one way to make it is to have a set of sensors on the top and right side of your screen that creates a grid to detect where your finger is... i think there is another way but it is equally clunky... plus they are sooo easy to break or permanantly damage with scratches... dont get one unluess you reallllllyyyy need one
