just because there tall doesnt mean they can play defense well against a good scorer. A good scorer can shake and bake a taller defender for a good look at the basket.

If you sacrifice speed for hight, a player like Kobe or D Wade could just pass by you and shoot an open shot or worse get a lay up or foul! If there was like .5 on the clock and they had no time outs so they had to pass a long shot after a free throw, then maybe it would work, thou I wouldn't recommend it, cuz speed would steel benefit running after the guards and causing the 5 sec violation or a steal or tip!

It is not all about height!!! Take Ben Wallace for example, Mr. No Fly Zone himself is listed at 6'9", but I think that is only with the Fro. I am not sure if it is true but I have heard people say he is actually only around 6'7". Speed an anticipation are key in blocking a shot. That is why Ben, tho small for a center, has just made his 8th season in a row with over 100 blocks (actally his lowest over that stretch was 130 blocks...not to mention he now has 7 seasons in a row with 100 or more steals as well...another area where speed and anticipation are important...I am a fan)

The big men a team has sitting at the end of their bench probably aren't the quickest guys out there, and a speedy guard could blow past them for an easy bucket or draw a shooting foul, which is even worse.
I would put my best defenders in, and my smart veterans, not necessarily the trees. Height doesn't mean the best choice imho.

The problem with putting in all tall players, is they usually lack the moving speed of a shorter player. Since the shorter player has less height and less mass, it takes him less energy to move (which means if he uses about the same energy to move, he'll move faster).
If I was in this situation and the opposing coach puts in all tall players to defend against the last shot. I'd instruct my players to set a pick for the best shooter. A taller defender who can't catch up to a faster player will not be able to block his shot (not that I expect the shorter player to drive in for a dunk or anything).

not all tall players are athletic enough, a point guard could look the other direction and the 7 footer with horrible footwork would just fall down, and the PG would have wide open shot....if 7 footer is as quick, and equal footwork, then fine, but lemme kno if you know any 7 footers than can handle the rock.

speaking from the point of view of a guard...my best asset is my speed on defense; but simply having speed doesn't equal the best defense against a final shot. you need guards with good hands...quick hands. you can do more to defend a shot than just have good footwork and lateral movement. my strategy was to make you question your ball-handling skills. if i could just knock the ball away one time, you're in trouble. now just because i'm a guard, doesn't make it easier for me. i've seen tall guys with very good anticipation, and therefore good defense against someone driving to the hole. basically you have to play guys who are defenders. i know plenty of short guys with zero defensive skill. if you wanna put the tallest guys in the game...that's fine. but if they are not defensive players...then what's the use?

Because most likely your biggest guys are your slowest guys, so if they are trying to man-up on them, quicker guards will go right around them for a easy lay-up. Your scenario to put bigger players on smaller players is too simple and would work for the whole game if quickness didn't come into play.

Because the smaller, generally more athletic gaurds would be able to out-manuever the slower big men, most likely causing a foul and getting to shoot uncontested free throws rather than a game winning shot.

Tall is great as long as the person is taking the shot right in front of them. However, a tall person that is as fast as a shorter person is very rare. Thus its easier to get yourself into a position where the tall person ISN'T directly in front of you, and you get a clear shot.
At least with shorter, faster defenders they'll have a hand in their face when they take the shot.
