Usually you hear something walking around when you know no one is there.
I was little and we lived in a "spirited" place. Not friendly spirits. We used to hear things walk around. Or thump and bump. Sometimes it would open the attic door by itself too and throw things around in the room. Creepy. Glad it didn't follow us when we moved out!

Holes in the ceiling , food going missing and strangers at the end of your bed when you wake in the middle of the night.....Creepy
