My gas fire is unsafe in the house I have just moved in to and I'd like to know when, and who installed it. The manufacturer label has been burned off and only a serial number is present. Can I locate a manufacturer?

Yes if you found somebody that understood the serial number it might show the date and which model it is. But if it's the batch number then nI don't think so. Why don't you have a company like british gas over to check it for you?

It will be difficult, but here are some leads to chase down. Do you know when your home was built and by whom? Try to contact the builder. Ask around the neighborhood if you are in a subdivision. I'm one of the few in my subdivision who is an original owner of my home and I kept the builder's book which contains all of the information pertaining to what was installed and the manufacturers. You also might try to get a chimney sweep out there to look at it. The ones that are certified in our area are very familiar with different brands and can identify most manufacturers.

Finally, if your fireplace was manufactured by Martin Fireplaces they went out of buisness largely due to the failure of their refractory panels and their "thermosyphoning" chimney components. Parts for them are all but nonexistant.

All manufactuers and engineers in this area must be corgi resgistered.

Have a look at the link below. They maybe able to help. If the engineer was registered then they should have a record of who it was. If they are not then you will have a hard time trying to find out who they were.
