If you are "written up" you are being advised that something was not in accordance with company standards. Your notice is put into your personnel file, and will be reviewed at times like annual reviews, promotions etc. Also, if you are written up several times, it can be cause for termination.
It is never good to get a bad remark in your file.

What should happen is that you receive a written document along with a verbal counseling session to tell you where you are not meeting the performance standards for your position. Then what should happen is that you correct the deficiencies and perform properly. The write-up goes into your employee file and if your performance doesn't improve, it forms the basis of a legal defense as to why the company had to fire you for poor performance.
Straighten up and fly right, ok?

To be "written up" means you are given a written warning for something you did wrong. The warning system is in place so the company has documented backup they followed correct procedure. Typical company policy is if you recv 3 written warnings for the same offense your employment can be terminated.
