A realistic person takes "all' the facts and possiblities into consideration, including human factors. And recognizes all of the possible outcomes in a balanced way.

A negative person tends to focus more on the negative facts and is more inclined to believe that the outcome will be negative. S/he can convince others of that outcome as well.

I have personally witnessed this with physicians that I consulted for. The first doctor was in a panic. I did not feel that the situation was as dire as she made it out to be. But, I was just the subject matter expert in one area, not the treating physician.

Her shift ended and another physician took over. His perspective was similar to mine. I have worked with the first doctor on 3 cases and she always sees the glass half empty.

She looks at a set of facts and assumes (for whatever reason) that a negative outcome is more likely than a positive one. Whereas, a realist will see that either a negative or positive outcome is possible, and work to make it positive.

When we receive a piece of news we have to sort out the facts from the implications of those facts.

Suppose you hear that interest rates have increased by 1/2 %. That part is the fact. But without considering the implications to you, to the economy, etc. that piece of news is pretty worthless.

Perhaps you have debt that is subject to a variable interest rate. The implication will be that you must either pay higher payments or it will take longer to pay off the debt. That is still being factual. But if you go further and take this to mean that there is a conspiracy underway to get your money you are being negative.

Also if you ignore the fact that you will earn more interest on your savings accounts and/or investments (which might even make you more money than the higher interest will cost you on your debts) you would be ignoring the positive news and focusing on the negaitive that would be (duh) negative.

Or if you have no debt and stand to gain from the change but only focus on the fact that you will be taxed on the higher earnings I'd have to say taht is being negative too.

Another important of this is to not just ask yourself how this will impact you but to ask "given the change in conditions how should I change my behavior to minimize the negative effects and maximize the positive effects?". That is being realistic.

A lot of people don't see a difference or see you as being negative when you are being realistic the thing is that when you are being realistic you are not only stating the negative of the situation you can also state positive things that can come out of the situation

A realistic person is both positive and negative. When you're realistic, you know almost every thing and certainly every person has both good and bad aspects.

A negative person is someone who goes on and on about the negative, never stating the positive.

An optimistic realistic person is somone who is aware of all the bad, but chooses to talk mostly about the positive when it's not necessary to talk about the negative.

I think the line is drawn when someone constantly has negative words to realistic situations. Not everything that is realistic has to be negative. There are just some people who refuse to see the positive about anything.

Realistic to some poeple is negative and fatalistic to others. Some people have had a hard time of it, and they let that color their outlook on the world. People who have either never had a good time, or have had a bad time but don't let it cloud their perceptions, will see that as being negative. It's all in the eye of the beholder.

Being negative is seeing everything as bad.

Being realistic is seeing everything as good, bad, or neutral.

I'm a realist. I see things as they are. I try not to judge unless I feel I need to.

There is no difference. A realistic view of the world has to paint a horrible sad picture. LIfe stinks. Then watch. Hillary will be elected and all will be well.... ahhhh.

Maybe negativity resonates hopelessness, whereas realists are more objective and hopeful?
