Ill link to stuff on there I already know about - such as technical terms - and find the technical writing is terrible. Caught some news report on it yesterday that professors dont trust it as a source on their students papers also.

Since it's edited by its users, some areas are better written than others. You can improve the articles that you think are poorly done, and make the product better. My son took a class with one of the creators of Wikipedia and he said that the content is usually more current and accurate than many other sources because the people who care most about the information are the ones writing it. If someone writes something stupid, it quickly gets corrected. Controversial sites cannot be updated directly, but are reviewed by an editor.

In my son's class, they had a mini-Wikipedia. Each class member was required to post on 30 or more topics. He was astonished how much knowledge was available just from that single class.

as a university student myself, i try to avoid it at all costs because the thing is with wikipedia some of the facts aren't verified for accuracy and so these can be edited. in certain cases, where i wanted to search for something i only use wikipedia sources if there was information on a subject that i couldn't find on the web and thus, wikipedia is my last resort. therefore, it's not the fact that it can be poorly written, but some of those resources may have been made up on the spot and so these can be unreliable

To be honest, the idea is if you think you can do it better, you can. If you think the writing is bad or incorrect, correct it. If you just say, that is poor writing or that is wrong, you are defeating the purpose which is that those who know contribute to help those who don't.

Some parts are extremely well written, some are not. So pitch in and help it improve.

BTW a lot of professors are not very good sources for their students either so it works both ways!

Wikipedia is written by the world. Anyone who wants can edit any entry in Wikipedia. If you found something you thought was wrong, you could edit it. Wikipedia is based on the premise that there is no such things as facts only what the majority hold as true and factual. Of course professors don't like wikipedia it undermines their authority. They believe they should define what is and isn't true.

If you find technical terms that are incorrect on wikipedia, you may correct them yourself!!!

Professors just expect you to find other resources, most of wiki info is fairly accurate. You can always follow the links at the bottom of the page. Try the search engine at http://www.vivisimo.com

Wikipedia sayds more than I know, so I don't mind researching my questions through it. I've educated myself a little more since it exist. If it's wrong well It shouldn't be there, because we will all be misled.
