Reading music is pretty easy to learn, you can buy books about music theory that will tell you everythig you need to know. Writing songs is a bit trickier, there's not really a right or a wrong way to do it and nothing's set in stone, you just have to mess around until it sounds right. But if you have an instrument like guitar or piano, you don't have to be able to read music to write songs. Plenty of famous composers can't read music, I could be wrong but I think Paul Mcartney was one of them...?

the main thing is to be original ... so that you have something that people want to hear, and that you can protect as your intellectual property

I'd suggest that you just sit at a keyboard and invent things you like ... listening to harmonies and moods ... and putting lyrics to them

I'm ok with melody and harmony, but I just don't have the right mind set for adding lyrics .. so I will always be poor.
