I have applied for a couple of jobs lately that have required some personality test or another. I took the AMPM test online, which was very similar to the ones the employees gave, and it said I was a "non-conformist."

Am I unemployable outside of academics?

An earlier answer indicated some employers prefer their employees to be like a herd of sheep. That may be true enough, but you can bet those sheep need an independent shepherd. Aim for a leadership/ownership situation, instead.

Nothing wrong with being a non conformist. I test very high as a non conformist as well. The thing you need to be prepared for is how to answer questions regarding the need to have you to conform to some area's of business.

If you are in sales being a non conformist is great, unless you refuse to turn in your weekly paperwork, then it's an issue. Just be honest about where and when you know it's appropriate to break the rules and when to bend your sensibilities and you should do just fine.

Depends what job u r applying for/testing for.
Some jobs vaue non conformity more than others eg. advertising.
Selection is not just based on the test results, but other relavant data too.
There are some things u have to strictly adhere too in most jobs eg. rules etc. where u cant go doing what u want to just to prove u r not a follower.
You have to prove ur worth before ppl follow u.

In a world where everyone must follow the leader like a herd of brain-less sheep, non-conformists are most definitely screwed.

No - just keep retaking the test until it gives the answers you think the employers want. Personality tests are easy to fake, if you really need to work perhaps you should hide some of your personal side? Does the employer REALLY need to know EVERYTHING personal about you? I don't think so, as long as quality work is performed and you get along well with your coworkers that should be enough.

Employers hire you for a job to get done. If you have piercings or tatoos that scream "look at me", then I wouldn't hire you. Just the facts of being a grownup and earning a livlihood.

Hello....been to Hollywood lately? Any creative profession is chock full of non-conformists....design (furniture, clothing, greeting cards); architecture; marketing; graphic arts; entertainment industries are full of them. There are companies that value non-conformity and off-the-map thinking. You may have heard of some of them: Microsoft....Google.....Cisco.....

Be who you are, be proud of what you bring to the table. Anarchists unite! :)

Certainly. Personality tests are one tool that employers use, but not the only factor that they use in evaluating candidates. Your skills, abilities, and talents will weigh more heavily.
