8% is probably generous. There are enough armchair philosophers on YA to fill many stadiums. Philosophy is actually hard work. One does not become a good philosopher by sipping Guinness, consuming L's or altering one's state of consciousness. Nor does broad or deep reading necessarily make one a good philosopher. One must be trained to be philosophical and I think that biology dictates how proficient one will be at grasping theoretical or cognitive matters. Few are chosen when it comes to philosophy. Very few!

Very very very few. Most answers don't contain any argument (or clear, consistent explanation). I'd say maybe 5% know what they are talking about. Philosophy is not for the common man. As Aristotle says, philosophy requires leisure. In our modern world (and even in the ancient and medieval worlds) most people simply do not have enough time to really think about the questions of philosophy. And this doesn't even begin to touch on the issue of education and familiarity with proper philosophical thought. Merely pondering over a Guinness, as stated above, does not make you a philosopher.

Philosophy comes from two sources; education and every day life experiences. To determine the percentage of those who do or don't know what they're talking about is a statement which in no way can be proven right or wrong by using any type of math - especially those who relate from their every day life experiences and the thoughts they have developed over time.
Therefore, your question just does not make any sense!!!!!

8% sounds pretty fair to me. You actually don't even need to read the answers to figure that out- just read the questions. I wonder how many people on here think of philosophy in the colloquial "like a philosophy of life" sense, not the actual discipline.

Well, it's Yahoo. What are you gonna do? C'est la vie.

u are sort of correct. Philosophy is not really facts, but opinons on matters that are somewhat uncomprehensable. (obviously, some of us cannot spell) Almost nobody knows what they are talking about because the subject of philosophy is opinions. nobody really knows the answers. i.e. what is the sound of one hand clapping? do you know? do you think you know? Do you know what you are talking about? Mull it over...

I think if you take 1 (for me) and divide it by the number of people in Y!A philosopy, you will have your exact answer.

i'd say 20%. The rest are applicable to practicality.

The question makes sense only if you yourself know what you are talking about. Do you? ;-)

I really think you are being quite generous here since this is mostly an opinion type topic
