Like people are saying 54Mbps must be the local speed of your home network. Your internet speed won't be over 8Mbps on a typical BT service. I am on BT and it varies a lot with time of day. It is currently at circa 4Mbps.
If you use the Firefox browser you can get an add-on that will tell you your current speed. If it seems very slow your actual speed may be poor.

Are you sure your speed is 54mbps? When a person uses wireless internet the speed of the card to the router is most likely 54mbps. that is the standard for wireless speed but for actual internet speed the highest speed i have ever seen is 10mbps. I have never even heard of that speed for actual internet speed that would be lighing fast. Go to internetfrog.com and test your internet speed it will tell you the actual speed. I think you are mislead by something because broadband speed is not that high yet. By the way what is BT?

54mbps is just about right for bt broadband, remember this is the wireless connection speed, not the download or line speed
infact 54mbps is the max recommended wireless speed for the bt home hub,i normally get between 32mbps and 40mbps on my wireless connection so yours is running at its optimal speed
bt home hubs are not the best wireless routers to be honest, they are ill conceived and suffer from many problems,if you want to improve your speed try using another router such as netgear or belkin as these manufacturers are solely dedicated to wireless network hardware
good luck

This is the same as I have, I also use BT Yahoo. I connect wirelessly and have a 2Mbit connection. Web page loading can be a tad slow, but I find downloading is quite fast.
The only other thing I would say, it's sometimes a good idea to delete the temporary internet files because of the amount of space it takes up.

54 mbits is the connection between your laptop and the wireless router, not your overall connection speed. That is determined by the type of connection you have, 6 mbit for typical TV cable and 768k to 3 mbit for DSL. Overall speed is no faster than the slowest part of the link.
