Inertia is the property of matter that is, essentially, the tendency for an object at rest to remain at rest, and an object in motion to remain in motion.
Inertia is why you keep moving forward when the car you're in stops suddenly (hence seatbelts), and why astronauts get pressed back into their seats when they blast off.

The root of the word is "inert" and it means unchanging. Inertia may be a specific scientific term deal with Newton's law of motion or it might be our personal tendencies to procrastinate.
Over all it implies that it takes some kind of force or action to overcome it (inertia).

inertia is the tendency of an object to resist a change in motion.
this is the reason why you have air bags in your car.
when your car has an accident, the car or wall you hit causes your car to slow or stop, but because your not part of the car, you tend to keep going in the same direction you were driving in. this could cause you hit the steering wheel or wind shield, and air bags prevent this so you don't end up with serious injury

It means two things.
#1.
A ball that is rolling will continue to roll at the same speed forever and ever and ever and ever..... it will never stop, it will never go faster, it will never go slower. It just keeps on rolling at the same speed.
It will only stop or change speed when there is force applied to it. E.g: gravity or friction.
#2.
A ball is in the middle of a field. It is not rolling. It is perfectly motionless. The ball will continue to remain motionless forever and ever and ever... it will never move, not the slightest bit.
It will only start to move when there is force applied to it. E.g: when the wind blows, or a boy kicks it.
So, in summary:
Inertia is the concept that an object in motion will remain in motion at constant speed until a force is applied to it. And an object will remain motionless unless force is applied to it.

I just learned this recently. It is the amount of force it takes to move or stop an object. Like if you have a grocery cart and you are moving it up a hill. An empty one is easier to move then one filled with groceries. The same thing with stopping it if it starts to roll down a hill.
