My family goes to both all the time. We live closer to California, but my dad's from Florida, and we go to one or the other every year, so I know both pretty well. Here's the difference:
California is smaller. It only has two theme parks (Magic Kingdom and California Adventure), and they're right across from each other. Disneyland, though, does have my very favorite ride which Disney World doesn't: Indiana Jones. I also like the Small World and the Pirate ride in Disneyland better (they have the Lousiana swamp on the Pirate ride where you start in Disneyland), though the one in DisneyWorld is fine, too. If you go to Disneyland and you want a nice lunch or dinner, be sure to reserve a place at the Blue Bayou. That's one that looks over the Lousiana swamp on the pirate ride, and it's a fun and romantic atmosphere. It's my ultimate favorite Disney restaurant, and they don't have that at Disney World. California also has the original Tiki room, if you like that sort of thing (I personally like that one much better than the one in Florida that's "under new management"--for historical purposes as well as other reasons). Also, California has the Matterhorn bobsleds. That's a fun one, old though it is. It's not too wild, which I like. I know they have the Everest ride in Orlando, but I haven't ridden it so I don't know how it compares.
I don't like to spend tons of time in the California Adventure, though there are some pretty cool places there. But most of their best rides are also in Disney World. California Soarin' is in the Epcot, the Hollywood Tower Hotel is in the MGM Studios. However, I think California Screamin', as well as possibly the Grizzly Rapids (unless that is in one of the water parks) are only in the California Adventure. So it is worth going to if you're spending any length of time there.
California has some other great places, too. San Diego isn't too far from Anaheim. It's right next to Tiajuana, Mexico. You can take a bus across and spend a few hours shopping and bartering. It's just a fun minor excursion into another country, which is kindof fun. The San Diego zoo is also world famous, if you're into zoos.
Also, if you're to going the opposite extreme (the north end) of California, there's San Francisco and the redwoods. That is a fair bit of travel from Anaheim, though (I'm talking a day's worth of sitting in the car), so you decide if its worth it to you.
Sorry this is so long. Hopefully it is helpful, though. If you have any more questions or want any more info. on anything, feel free to email me.

The Magic Kingdom at Disneyworld IS Disneyland except with a bigger castle. The only thing Disneyland has that Disneyworld doesn't is the CA Adeventure Theme Park, which is highly overrated. Disneyworld is completely different b/c it's about the size of Paris or SF and the parking lot at the Magic Kingdom can fit Disneyland in it. Plus there are tons of theme parks and water parks, golf courses, ect..within Disneyworld. Disneyland is surrounded by suburban Orange County sprawl. You are not going to see anything different at Disneyland if you have been to the Magic Kingdon at Disneyworld, they are exactly the same. But there are a ton of other things to see and visit in the area. There are other Theme parks like Knotts Berry Farms, Six Flags Magic Mountain, Universal Studios, Hollywood, Santa Monica,ect.. San Diego is a just short drive south of Disneyland and there is SeaWorld, SD Zoo, and the Wild Animal Park plus SD has some of the best beaches in CA. There is so much to do in Southern CA besides Disneyland,

Magic Kingdom at Disneyworld is similar to Disneyland, but Disneyland is so much better! The attractions are just a liiitle bit different, and I think the landscaping is a world of difference. We also have CA Adventure next door, which is a good park (granted not as good as Disneyland)
As far as theme parks go we also have Universal Studios, Six Flags Magic Mountain, Knotts Berry Farm.
I think Medieval Times in Buena Park is a fun experience if you are visiting the OC/LA area.
Also, check out our beach cities: Santa Monica is great for the Pier and the Promenade.

disneylands all over the world are all pretty great. the disneyworld is a lot bigger, with more rides and shows. if you really want the best disney experience, go to disneyworld for 3 days or more. disney world cant be completely explored in one day.

I haven't been to disneyworld so i couldn't tell you, sorry. But here in california there are a million things to see, it just depends on your interest. There's six flags, universal studios, knotts berry farm, and a handfull of water parks. There's also alot of beaches and then there's things to see in hollywood (walk of fame, etc). If your interested in museums, there's a ton of different kinds of those in LA. Another attraction is route 66 and all the ghost towns along that way. If you like aquariums and zoos then there's plenty of those. Up north a little there are national parks, and wine country of course. Just think about what you like. Hope you enjoy yourself.
And to the guy above me, disneyland is the original, not disneyworld.

Disneyland is actually older than Disneyworld. Disney land is an amazing place where everything is all together! It has different lands but they are so far apart where you have to drive to a different one!
