a japanese ps3 will cost me $150 cheaper than an american ps3, i've researched the net and it seems that i can create an account with american networks and shop and play pal or ntsc-u games, however i couldn't seem to find out if i can upgrade my ps3 firmware from the american playstation site, needless to say the japanese site is not in english and i presume that instructions might be in kanjii
cheers!

You can set the playstation language to whatever you speak. And the software will find the right site it needs for updates.
Just keep in mind you can play any region ps3 game, but you'll only be able to play japanese ps1 and ps2 games.
