Tricky but this is how it is, if your interested in attackers the top five in no particular order are Pele, Best, Maradonna, Platini & Cruyff. Pele did say that George Best was the greatest but Pele the gentlemanly legend said many other things that wernt as legendary as his skills. No man has ever been able to run past defenders as easily as Maradona period, there is however more than just attackers in a game of football Franze Beckenbauer was one of the best defenders, Zidane is one of the best midfielders and the only player in the last decade that would make the top 10 but for me Pele pips Maradona as the greatest of ALL.

The greatest player that I have seen during my lifetime and as a football fan is Zinedine Zidane. The man was an artist and simply oozed class and arrogance everytime he had the ball. Its a shame he ended his career the way he did during the World Cup Final.
I wasn't alive when Pele and George Best were in their heyday and have only seen brief footage of them. I have seen a little more of Diego Maradona and as an England fan, still only admire that goal he scored against us in Mexico '86 (putting that Hand of God cobblers to one side).
Other notable mentions are Romario, Rivaldo, Ronaldinho and Thierry Henry who I feel is the best player to have played in England.
Young players who will join the Hall of Fame are Wayne Rooney and Lionel Messi.

Nice question amis the trash I 've been seeing on th eforum these days...
I won't disagree with those who say Pele, for the man is a legend... but, my answer would me more or less like:
1. Luis Figo - a great inspirational leader for Poerugal.. truly, one of the Golden Generation
2. Zizou - The man is brilliant
3. Paolo Maldini - Still top defender in my book!

George Best, Zola, Pele, Maradona, Zidane. Cristiano Ronaldo looks like a boot-leg version of Best. It's a shame that us English don't have a player that was considered as a legend, I reckon Rooney can bring us glory though.
