I just wanted to comment on a couple things "Old Guy" stated. The Patton Hotel is now defunct; it was replaced by the Edelweiss Lodge several years ago. Second, even if the Patton Hotel was still in operation, it's highly unlikely that this person or her family would've been able to get into it, seeing as how it was exclusively for American military personnel, their families, or other individuals who were in some way affiliated with the US government. It's no different for the Edelweiss Lodge. Second, the castle you were referring to is Schloss Neuschwanstein, arguably the most well-known castle in Germany--and yes, Disney did base his Cinderella castle at Disneyland after Ludwig's Neuschwanstein. That aside, Garmisch-Partenkirchen is certainly well-worth seeing, as is Zugspitze... not to mention that Garmisch isn't far from Munchen (Munich) or from Innsbruck, Austria. There are dozens of other places I'd personally recommend, but Garmisch would definitely be a contender--American-exclusive hotels aside, of course.

Bavaria in southern Germany. Go to Garmish and take the Cable Car to the top of the Zugspitz. It's the highest point in Germany and absolutely beautiful. (you can ski if you like) The dining at the Patton Hotel is outstanding and it is a great place to stay. While in the area there are several Castles to visit, especially Nui-Swinstine (sp) built by King Ludwig and modeled by Walt Disney at Disneyland.

Jack C : Normandy is in north-western France !
It depends on what your brother likes... If he likes cities, Paris, Rome or Athens are for me the best one... But if he likes the country, the sun, the beach and the nature, Andalusia (Spain) or South-West France (Arcachon Basin) are good places...

Bruges in Belgium is a perfect little mediaeval town with loads of canals, full of stunningly friendly people ( and bicycles).
