Well, you should have grown up when I did in New England, when such things were not only called soda and pop, but also "tonic," "fizz" and "Coke" as a term for any carbonated beverage.
Yes, we should all be more precise with language.
One of my pet peeves is "I could care less," when they actually mean "I could not care less."

Actually I don't like the term "pop" -- it's soda! ;p
But words that really drive me nuts? "Aks" instead of "ask," and, at the top of my list: "nucular" instead of "nuclear." What's worse is when incorrect usage (such as nucular) becomes used with such frequency that it weedles its way into "proper usage," and becomes recognized as a valid and legitimate word. I mean, serioiusly, who can look at the word "nuclear," see how it's spelled, and then pronounce it "nucular"???
ETA To those who think "soda" is west coast usage, and/or that "pop" is what's said on the east coast: I can't speak for the south eastern states and frankly I don't remember what's common usage in New England, but at least in the NY tri-state area, and down at least to northern VA, the word is "soda."

pop/soda/coke doesnt bother me. The two that drive me up the wall are:
1) When someone is driving, gets stuck behind someone going slow and says, "you could AT LEAST go the SPEED LIMIT." Well, the speed limit is the highest speed you are allowed to go, legally...you shouldn't be going AT LEAST that fast.
2) This is my biggest pet peeve ever. "I could care less." It is supposed to be "I COULDN'T care less." If you COULD care less, then you obviously still care a little bit. You're not at the bottomed out level of not caring.

i'm not bothered by the term "soda" for "pop." where i live, NO ONE calls it "pop." it's just a regional thing. i know back east, they say "pop."
i am also bothered by "new-que-ler" for "nuclear." our president pronounces it incorrectly, so that tells you what shape we are in.
a big one that bugs me is "CONVERSATE." people often say "i like to CONVERSATE about anything," meaning, they like to have conversations. the infinitive is "CONVERSE," with the accent on the second syllable. "CONVERSATE" is not a word!!!
