It was a very devided congress that passed this. But Pelosi worked hard for it to get passed.

This gives the Iraqi gov't plenty of time to get their butts on the right track. The problem is their president is seen as being very weak in the eyes of the Shiites and Sunnis.
However, If Bush vetos this, the Republicans can kiss their 2008 presidential bid and seats in the house and senate goodbye because the American people want the U.S out of Iraq.
What do you think? Is fall 2008 too soon, not early enough or what?

That isn't exactly what it says. It says that a phased withdrawal of our troops should BEGIN no later than September 2008.

I bring this up because next September, I don't want to hear from neocons that we didn't do what we said we would.

Not that it matters. Vetoman will never let it become reality.

I'm a Dem and I'm not sure how I feel about it. I don't agree with the war or how it was started, but I'm not sure walking away from it is the right thing either.

But, any bill passed by Congress will be vetoed by Bush.

This means they then have to come back with a 2/3 majority vote in both the House and the Senate.

They aren't even close in either. It will not make it out alive.

It's a symbolic gesture more than an actuality.

I think Bush should be impeached and Cheney should step down.
Bush is the biggest threat to American security I can think of.
Whatever decision, I don't trust the man enough to complete the mission in Iraq.
Impeach him, show the world that he is not America. Let congress appoint a republican (Chuck Hagel) to fill the remainder of his term. President Bush should give the American public what they really need at this time, and that is a leader they can trust.
This mistrust of the president does undermine his authority and rather than trying to shut up his critics, he should resign or be impeached.
Nice question.

President Bush just said he would Veto the bill. The game won't play. They only narrowly passed it in the House ,it won't pass in the senate and they will not be able to do anything but delay the troops getting their money. At a time when things are going the Presidents way in Iraq this is a death sentence for the Democrats.

Hasn't passed yet. Still has to go through senate & President Bush has already made clear he will veto! The resolution barley passed congress - they need 218 votes & thats all they got. As far as pulling out 9/08 - who knows, you can not put a time line on a war it impossible.

You and your lefty backers are putting way to much weight into this.

This is nothing but a political ploy.

It gets vetoed. You will not come near the votes you need to overturn a veto.

Go ahead and cut funding to troops in a time of war, and see what happens.

You lose.

Instead of trying to fight what we are doing, how about do something constructive and HELP us win the damn thing , so they can come home.

If we , the American public, would let the military use the weapons, and training we have given them, this would be over.

Two bombs dropped on japan in WW2, ended the war, and saved 10 times the amount of lives that were lost by the bombs, because the fighting stopped.

Now Japan is one of our strongest allies.

Let our military use the weapons, and training they have to win.

how can you put a deadline on the war on terror?

and how can you say that American people want the US out of Iraq? did you get that from a poll you saw on cnn?

You just dont want Bush's new plan to succeed because you are vested in defeat and want the US to lose in Iraq so the democrats could win in 2008.

i know the terrorists will be rooting for the democrats to win in '08.....i think that says enough

2008 is long overdue, if we pull out it should have happened yester-year.....
Also, don't think if Bush Veto's it that the Republicans can kiss it all goodbye... "America" is very divided, don't assume We ALL want the same thing...Don't underestimate the Power of the Conservative FAR RIGHT....the are mass in numbers....more so than Democrats.......
Don't assume anything....We WILL not pull out in 2008.....We still have military Units on the Schedual to deploy forcast out until 2010 or some **** like that........

Yes, well, did you mention the part of the bill that goes to build peanut storage facilities in Georgia? Or the Katrina victims stuff? What other pork is in this bill?

There is no way that Bush can sign this bill. It's .5% for the troops and 99.5% pork and poop. Of course it will look bad, but any person who is deceived by that bullcrap need to have their voting rights taken away.

It's still got to go to the Senate. Only the House passed this. It will be read in the Senate and referred to its death in committee.
