When getting a pap smear they will scrape some cells off the cervix to check for cancer. They also may feel to be sure everything is in the proper place and there are no bumps etc that shouldn't be there.

You will go into the examination room and they will give you one of those little paper dresses/examination gowns that they always make people wear. Then when the doctor comes into the room you will lie on the examination table (your feet may or may not be in stirrups) with your legs spread so that the doctor can access your cervix.
Then the doctor takes a speculum (I think that is the right name) and gently scrapes some cells off your cervix. Then they look at the cells under a microscope to make sure that they're not cancerous or pre-cancerous.
The entire process is painless and should not take you very long at all. It is also important that you get a pap smear every two years or so, to make sure that you don't have cervical cancer.
(And no, that new vaccine they're coming out with is not a replacement for getting a pap smear, and won't cure cancer or pre-cancerous lesions if you've already got them.)

The purpose of a pap smear is to take a few cells from your cervix and check them for cervical cancer.

Just make sure you do not have unprotected sex 72 hours before pap smear. This will cause a negative result and you will have to do it all over again.

THEY SCRAP THE LINING OF YOUR CERVIX AND TAKE A CELL SAMPLE TO MAKE SURE YOU DO NOT HAVE ANYTHING ABNORMAL GOING ON. THE ALSO CHECK TO MAKE SURE THAT YOUR OVARIES DO NOT FEEL INLARGED DUE TO POSSIBLE CYST. IT IS A SIMPLE PROCEDURE AND VERTUALLY PAINLESS. IT IS NOT THE MOST PLEASANT THING YOU WILL EVER EXPERIENCE BUT IT IS A NORMAL AND SAFE PROCEDURE.
