Slave-trading was begun in Africa by tribes stronger than their neighbors. White men came there to explore. The chiefs of the tribes knew the white men would most likely not stay long and the strongest tribes saw in this an opportunity to reduce any threat from rival tribes. The strong tribes made war on the weaker tribes, captured their men and women, then sold their weaker enemies into slavery, this reducing any threats from other tribes. We will never know exactly who in the stronger tribes came up with the idea of slavery, but that's the origin of it. Slavery was not begun by white Europeans (too bad, libs). It was begun by black tribal leaders in Africa about 450 years ago...

Actually, slave trading goes back way farther than even African tribes and was more far reaching. In the ancient times most societies took capture enemies as slaves - and bartered them with people in their society and other societies (or kingdoms) for cash, goods, or trad routes.

The whole concept that the Evil white man made slavery is well - bullpoop. It went on long before the foundations of the United States was founded. Europeans cannot even lay claim to this original enterprise - it was pretty much one of those things that was "just always practiced" until the late 1800's. Most societies had it in some way, shape or form. Even the beloved British who steered clear of the Civil War because of the issue of slavery practiced indentured serivitude - which was a person working to gain their freedom (if your not free - your a slave - it was just a more gracious form of slavery).

Who started it -- someone who realized that his enemy could do the dishes and plow his field if beaten down enough.....long long long before the white man per say became involved.
