La Llarona was a woman with small children. She fell in love with a man who didn't want her children so she drowned them to be with the man. The man left her anyway, so she was alone without the man or the children. She wanders the arroyos and creeks wailing for the children she murdered.

Sounds a little like that Susan Smith who drowned her two little boys a few years back. She did it because she had a boyfriend who didn't want the kids. She didn't keep the boyfriend, either.

This version was told to me by an elderly Mexican-American lady from Marfa, Tx.

Los niños fueron al río para jugar y divertirse y entonces ellos oyeron de repente llorona de la y se asustó porque ellos averiguaron que ella acaba de ahogar sus propios niños y sentía la culpa después. But I don't believe en La Llorona
