It would be seen as disrespectful to go in casualwear such as jeans and a t-shirt. Black is the norm for a funeral although it depends on the person being burried, if they were a cheery happy person, they might've requested a "no black" dress code.

To be on the safe side and show respect, I'd go for black tie!

It used to be that way here in Canada...dark suit dark plain tie. Many still do this. However things have lightened up a bit. Dress clothes are still the prefered attire (not excessively bright colours though) and some dress casual. However it is still not considered by many as respectfull to wear jeans or everyday street clothes....as a few do.

Black tie, white shirt, black suit. Casual clothes at a funeral is poor taste and disrespectful.

Wear whatever you wish to wear; The person is dead and they can't see you anyway. Do be respectful don't wear a see through fishnet tank top. I have gone to many, many funerals and it really is anything goes dress wise. I have worn jeans and a sport coat with tennis shoes before it depends on the individual whose service you are attending (my dads and I was overdressed I should have worn overalls and a Tshirt); Ask yourself what would they prefer; You aren't there for a fashion show it's to pay your last respects.

Black tie is the norm. I never heard of a casual funeral. No sarcasm intended there by the way

"Black tie" is formal (a tux) and is not approriate. Casual wear can be viewed as disrespectful to the family and dead, so it is not appropriate. You should wear conservative, dress clothes. Black or dark clothing is considered more suitable to some, but it is not necessary.

People expect you to wear a tie and preferably a suit.

However the most important thing is to show respect and not upset the other mourners by your apparel.
